Weighing, sampling and distribution activities are the process of transferring a certain amount of powder or liquid raw material from bulk container to smaller containers at certain rates for charge production.

In the pharmaceutical industry, these processes are critical operations as they form the basis of pharmaceutical production. At this stage, a certain amount of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and excipients (excipient) should be measured precisely according to the specified recipe. In a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, operators normally follow step-by-step procedures defined in the charge production record (BMR), and then the measured materials are sent to the manufacturing team. A small amount of raw material is reserved for quality control. Here, full compliance with the formulation description is essential for safe and efficient pharmaceutical dosage form production.

Because these activities are often carried out in bulk, spills involve risks such as leakage and hazardous volatile emissions. In addition, these activities may cause health problems on operators exposed to substances for a long time or cause contamination of the environment where the operation is performed.

To prevent this, engineering measures must be taken to ensure adequate airflow for the equipment first and then for the clean room facility and to prevent the formation of vapors or dust. According to international standards, this can be achieved with equipment that provides unidirectional laminar air flow with certain pressurization control and air velocity.

For industries dealing with chemicals with explosive properties, an ATEX area should be established by an ATEX specialist. The ATEX classified area should be considered when designing the facility and selecting materials for weighing, distribution and sampling operations.

Pharmaceutical companies have to record or track data of events in the processes as specified in the guide documents. Therefore, different equipment used for weighing, distribution and sampling meet this requirement using human machine interfaces (HMIs) that can be connected to companies' control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
